405 stainless steel is a ferritic alloy with 11.5–12.5% chromium, very low carbon (<0.08%), and some silicon and manganese. It has a tensile strength of 450–500 MPa and a yield strength around 250 MPa, with good ductility and moderate hardness. Its ferritic structure enhances oxidation resistance and lowers the risk of stress corrosion cracking. 405 also offers good weldability and formability, making it economical for industrial use. Although less corrosion-resistant than austenitic stainless steels, its strength and heat stability make it suitable for fasteners in hot and oxidizing environments.
